Partnering With Families

Many of us have heard the saying “I’d rather ask for forgiveness than for permission.” This approach is understandable. When our awareness is awakened, we don’t want there to be any interruption to the work we want to do with our students to create a more inclusive and equitable learning community. When we move forward without attempting to partner with families, however, we not only miss out on the opportunity to potentially partner with those who can be advocates, supporters, and allies in this work but we also don’t provide families with the opportunities to ask important questions.

Figure 4.1 shows an example of a letter that second-grade teacher Kara Pranikoff wrote to the families of her students in response to the Derek Chauvin trial. Kara communicates with families regularly about the conversations that take place in her classroom, sharing the context for the conversation, pointing out the questions students asked and the responses some made, and listing the books or articles the class reads and responds to together. In this way, Kara shows partnership with the families of the children in her care and opens a door for communication.
